There was a strange sound that the ex-owner put down to a motor wear issue. It turned out that it was the spline that went from the nylon gear in the motor housing, to the large cog that drives the chain ring, It was rubbing against the cover and wore a hole in the cover. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I opened it up and witnessed the carnaged below. rusty, loose particles, and obvious water ingress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The issue was that the lock-ring that holds in in place was missing (possibly when the last person disassembled it).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>after cleaning, replacing the bearings, adding a lock ring, &#8220;rust converting&#8221; the elements that were beginning to rust (to seal them up), re-greasing with high quanlity, nylon-safe grease, I reassembled it and it worked perfectly.
